The online training programme of ‘e-Waste Management’was organized on 28.07.2020 for faculty and students of UAS, Dharwad under NAHEP project. The resource person Dr. D. R. Kumaraswamy, Director, Institute for Environmental Studies, Bengaluru and Shri M. Krishna, MD and CEO CORAL Communications, Bengaluru were invited as resource persons.
Dr. M.B.Chetti, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor UAS, Dharwadinaugurated the webinar. He expressed that, India is one of the top countries which generates e-waste to the tune of 18.5 lakh tons per annum that causes tremendous environmental effect. He insisted all scientists and students to understand and adopt methods of reuse and recycle e-waste. Further he said India stands 5th rank in terms of e-waste production.
Dr. D. R. Kumaraswamy, Director, Institute for Environmental Studies, Bengaluru presented a detailed note of regulations of Governing e-waste management (2016). A regulation regarding proper use and disposal of e-waste is necessary. He highlighted the objective of channelizing the e-waste generated in the country towards authorized dismantlers and recyclers in order to formalize the e-waste recycling sector. Further he discussed about e-waste collection targets under the provision of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the Rules.
Shri M. Krishna, MD and CEO CORAL Communications discussed aboutthe methods of e-waste recycling and government initiatives. He stressed that care should be taken to proper handling and recycling of e-waste to protect the environment.
